Acid Reflux Medication
If you’re suffering from Acid Reflux Disease, then you’re certainly considering some of the popular acid reflux medication that you have available to you. Some of these medications will probably work rather well for you, and all of them are prescription only – in other words, you’ll need an appointment with your doctor in order to obtain them.
There are options other than investing in these medications, however, which you can read about on our Problems with Acid Reflux Medication page. In the mean time, here are some popular medications.
Nexium – Nexium is the “purple pill” acid reflux medication that claims to not only stop acid reflux problems, but also claims to heal much of the damage that acid reflux can cause you. The primary healing method that this pill utilizes is that it decreases the amount of stomach acid that your body produces, ideally limiting or preventing your body from pushing it upwards into your esophagus. This drug has been known to be fickle in working for many people, and often requires you to make multiple visits to your doctor to adjust dosing. In addition, it has many harsh side effects, including all the typical stuff – headaches, diarrhea, congestion, and so forth – but it has also been shown to decrease your immunity to pneumonia and cause labored breathing.
Protonix – This is a medication that you may not have heard of. It works as a PPI (proton pump inhibitor), which basically means that it tries to shut down your body’s natural reaction to pump stomach acid up your esophagus. Some of the more dangerous side effects of Protonix include a decreased level of B12 (which can lead to Anemia), increased levels of blood sugar (which can exacerbate diabetes), and soreness and bloating of your tongue.
Prilosec – Prilosec and Nexium are basically the same thing. The difference is that Prilosec is part PPI, and part stomach-acid-decreaser, which has the unfortunate problem of including both major solutions, and all the harsh and problematic side effects of both types of medication.
As you can see, these medications have a number of very serious side effects and could solve your acid reflux only to have a completely different problem come right up and bite you. For this reason, as well as many others, we strongly recommend staying away from these long-term medications, and treating your acid reflux problems at home with natural methods. Aside from a few modifications of your daily routine, with our Acid Reflux Solutions guide, you can solve almost all of your problems with this awful disease.
